you’ve seen us all before. we’re at your bus stop, in your classes, and everywhere you go. we like to write and read and draw and cook and make music and sew and play sports and blog and go for walks and dance and talk to our friends and watch movies and laugh and cry and hug and smile and dream. we have real lives and real problems, and we don’t have all the answers. we’re sad and happy, confused and confident, scared and strong. we are real girls.

I honestly don't know much about it. I mean, one on hand, it's totally sickening to me how a woman would exploit herself and her body that way, but, I mean, it is kind of her choice. I need to learn more about the legal aspects of the issue as well. What do you think? Could you fill me in a little more about the issue of prostitution?
Yeah, sure. Prostitution is illegal in all of america, the only place i know for sure it is legal is in the red light district of amsterdam, but i am pretty sure it is becoming illegal in much of europe. this actually came up because of an article on BBC, check it out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7927461.stm
Thanks so much, Hannah! I read the article on BBC and it was extremely interesting. I don't think it should be legal, and I'm glad it isn't in the U.S. I mean, we don't allow polygamy, so how can we allow prostitution? As for the women who take on those jobs, I really pity them, both because they have to be in a terrible place financially to take desperate measures like that, and also because they're willing to exploit themselves as prostitutes. I mean, I guess you can make the argument that it's her body, and she has the right to choose, but by that logic, wouldn't it say having any kind of unlawful sexual activity is okay?
What you have all not mentioned so far in your comments is being forced into prostitution. Sex trafficking and the like really upsets me. For me, prostitution is something that goes against my morals. It is good to hear that it is being banned and is stopping the destroy of many young women and girls' life. I also think we should be opening more jobs for the people who may need to resort to jobs such as prostitution (as most of the time it isn't by 'choice') so that they have a job. I am not sure if that last sentence made any sense... But anyway, that is my opinion. More action needs to be taken.
Very well said, I Wonder! Prostitution absolutely goes against my morals, and I wholeheartedly agree that we need to come up with better options for women who feel they need to resort to prostitution and the like.
I completely agree that sex trafficking is horrible. No one should be forced into it. However, I will always stick with my view that what a woman wants to do with her body is completely her choice. If a woman wants to sell herself, she should have that right. While it goes against my personal morals, I don't think it should be against the law.
(why do I feel that this may be controversial :D)
(ps. I'm back from Florida!)
I agree with randomlogic. I dont think prostitution should be against the law. Prostitution is basically just a woman renting out her body. Well, isnt surrogacy the same thing? a woman rents out her body. Why is that legally (not to mention socially) accepted and prostitution isnt?
Emma, I would initially agree with you but I'd like to point out that in this country (and I'm sure in New Zealand as well) there are many practices banned for moral reasons, so prostitution should be as well. As I said before, you're right, it is her body, and I believe in every woman's right to choose, but wouldn't that logic legalize all unlawful sexual activity?
Hannah, you're right that surrogacy and prostitution do have their similarities, but the key difference is their motives. While surrogacy attempts to provide a woman unable to have a child with a second chance, prostitution is merely selling your body for sexual pleasure. That seems very different to me.
Not that I know any actual facts or anything, but I think that most of the time prostitutes don't work by choice. They may have been stolen as a child or forced into working as a sex slave for their 'owner' to make money out of providing a way for customers to have 'sexual pleasure'. The whole idea makes me feel sick.
Remember, they may not just be able to quit their job and they may not even be legally living in the country they work in.
