International Women's Day!

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. First celebrated in 1911, it is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Since IWD was first celebrated, we have seen a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation.

While in some places women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women and men still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and global women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men, great improvements have still been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. The future for girls today is looking a lot brighter than those of our mothers and grandmothers.

Go women!! The United States should TOTALLY make it a national holiday! I'm a feminist, and I see so many symbols of sexism every day that totally aggravate me. But then I realize, you know what, look how far we've come! Yeah, maybe I can't look through a magazine without seeing emaciated models, or maybe my sister is mad because the boys in her grade think she's bad at sports because she's a girl, but honestly, in this country, girls can really do whatever they want to do. And we are unbelievably lucky for that. I complain all the time about sexist things that I see, but in reality, there are girls all around the world, in places like Uganda and Pakistan, that can't even get an education. We've made some amazing achievements. In this past election, we had two female candidates for major parties! I'd say that's a big step. So I think it's important to have International Women's Day to step back and put everything into perspective, and realize just how far we've come.

Argh, I've heard that women often don't get payed as much as men, and that really aggravates me. Yay, happy (belated) women's day, people!
